How to Bead Around a Cabochon: A Step-by-Step Bezeling Guide

A perfectly bezeled cabochon is one of the most satisfying things you can make as a beader. Once you learn the basic technique, you can turn any cab into a pendant, brooch, or focal point for earrings.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cabochon (flat-backed)
  • 10/0 or 11/0 seed beads in 2 colours (base round + accent)
  • Beading foundation (Pellon)
  • John bead thread or Miyuki
  • Size 10, 11 or 12 beading needle
  • E6000 or B7000
  • Scissors

Step 1: Secure the Cab

Glue your cabochon flat-side-down onto your beading foundation. Let it cure fully — at least 1 hour for E6000.

Step 2: Stitch Your Base Row

Thread your needle, knot, and come up through the foundation right against the cab edge. String 2 beads, lay them flat against the cab, and go back down. Come up between the 2 beads. Add 2 more. Continue around — this is basic backstitch.

Step 3: Close the Round

When you reach the start, pass through all beads in the row to pull them snug. This is your anchor row.

Step 4: Add the Bezel Row

Using your accent colour, stitch a second row directly on top of the first using peyote stitch (add 1 bead between each bead in row 1, stepping up at the end). Pull tight — this row folds inward and holds the cab in place.

Step 5: Add Edging Beads (Optional)

Stitch a final row around the outside of row 1 as decorative edging. Edging beads of your choice all work beautifully here.

Step 6: Trim and Finish

Carefully trim the foundation close to the outer edge. Back with ultrasuede or leather for a clean finish.

Pro Tips

  • Odd bead counts in the anchor row make peyote step-up easier
  • Use a contrasting thread colour while learning — easier to see your path
  • Tight tension is everything; don't rush the bezel row
